My Story

Drawing upon decades of experience navigating the complex intersections of international law, global business, and governance, James J. Maiwurm brings a unique and insightful perspective to his writing. As Chairman Emeritus Retired of Squire Patton Boggs, one of the world’s largest global law firms, he led thousands of professionals across dozens of offices in over 20 countries, shaping strategies and guiding transformational international combinations. His leadership earned him recognition by Law 360 as one of the top ten most innovative law firm managing partners in 2012.

With over 40 years as a transactional lawyer, Mr. Maiwurm advised a diverse range of businesses, from entrepreneurial start-ups to Fortune 50 companies, on complex matters including cross-border acquisitions, public offerings, joint ventures, and financial restructurings. His experience extends beyond law, having served as Chairman and CEO of a publicly-held international engineering services firm, leading its successful restructuring, and serving on the boards of public companies like Sandy Spring Bancorp, Inc., as well as numerous non-profit organizations.

Despite a career deeply embedded in the corridors of global power and finance—and having resided in the Washington D.C. area for over 30 years—Mr. Maiwurm’s roots trace back to small-town America. It is this blend of high-stakes international experience and an understanding of the bedrock values and challenges faced outside the major metropolitan centers that informs the authentic and compelling narrative of “Inheritance of Crises and Dysfunction.” Holding a degree in history from the College of Wooster and a law degree from the University of Michigan, his work explores the critical issues of our time through the lens of both global dynamics and deeply human stories.
